The Knot in the Rope

The workshop was quiet except for the scrape of a chisel. Elias sat at the heavy oak bench, the wood shavings curling at his feet. He had been here for twenty years. His hands moved with a rhythm that felt older than his memory. He was building a railing for a porch that would face the morning sun. The wood was white oak, dense and hard. He did not check the level. He did not measure twice. He knew the grain. He knew the tolerance. He knew the weight.

A young man came in, asking about the joinery. Elias looked up, surprised by the question. He did not remember the last time he had felt unsure. The craft was not just a job; it was his identity. If the wood held, it was because his hands held it together. He looked at the rope coiled in the corner, a thick hemp thing he used for securing the loads. He tied a bowline without thinking. His fingers did the work. The knot was tight. It was secure. But as he pulled on the loop, he felt the tension entirely in his own arms. He was holding the load. He had forgotten that the rope was not the strength. The rope was the shape. The strength had to come from somewhere else, but he had stopped looking for it. He pulled harder, straining his shoulders, proud of the grip he had, unaware that he was carrying the weight alone.

The Knot Holds the Rope, Not the Power

The knot you have tied is not the power that holds the load. It is the shape that allows the power to be used. When a carpenter binds a beam, the binding does not create the strength of the wood. It directs it. The skill is the form. The supply is the source. What God has written confirms that not by might nor by power, but by His Spirit, the Lord of hosts, does the work stand.

You have built this small business from the ground up. You know every supplier. You know every invoice. You know the preference of every customer. This knowledge is real. It is valuable. It is not an accident. It is the result of faithful work. But the knowledge is not the engine. The engine is the one who put the knowledge in your mind in the first place. Scripture puts it plainly that He who establishes is God, and the same Spirit who anointed is the guarantee of this work.

You are established by God in Christ. He has anointed you. This is not a title for a platform. It is a fact about your standing. He who establishes you is the same one who supplies you. The supply is secured. The written word says He has sealed you, and the Holy Spirit is given as the guarantee of this promise.

The fear is that if you admit you need Him for the next step, you will lose your footing. But the footing was never in your memory. The footing is in the one who knows your heart. Man looks on the outward appearance. God looks on the heart. Your competence is the outward appearance. Your dependence is the heart.

The Holy Spirit is the guarantee. He is not a backup plan. He is the guarantee of the work. When you step back from the bench and ask for the specific strength to do the task, you are not admitting defeat. You are acknowledging the source. The same Spirit who anointed you is the one who empowers you. What God has written is that He has sealed you and given you the Spirit as a guarantee.

It is God who works in you to will and to do for His good pleasure. This is not a passive waiting. It is an active collaboration. Your hands move. His power moves. The knot holds because of the tension, and the tension comes from the pull. You are the knot. He is the pull. The written word says He works in you, and the Holy Spirit is the one who empowers that work.

Do not say you are not sufficient. Your sufficiency is from God. This is not a contradiction to your skill. It is the explanation of your skill. The skill is the vessel. The supply is the content. Without the content, the vessel is empty. With the content, the vessel is full. Scripture puts it plainly that our sufficiency is from God, and the Holy Spirit is the guarantee of that supply.

The anointing abides. It is not something chased. It is not something earned. It is a reality that lives. The anointing from the Holy One is not a rank. It is a relationship. It is the connection between the one who sends and the one who is sent.

Zechariah heard the word of the Lord. It is not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit. This applies to the king, the priest, and the prophet. It applies to the builder of the railing. It applies to the owner of the small business. The might is not in the muscle. The power is not in the plan. The Spirit is in the work.

The work is not for glory. It is for Him. A chosen generation stands. A royal priesthood serves. This is not a license to be seen. It is a call to be used. The oil is for the assignment. The assignment is the work in front of the hands. The supply is the one who does the work within.

Faithful is He who calls you. He will do it. This is the promise. He does not leave the work unfinished. He does not send you without the supply. The knot holds because the one who tied it is holding the end.

The rope is not the strength. The knot is not the power. The one who holds the end is the strength. The one who gives the direction is the power. The instrument serves. He is the player. The music is not in the finger. The music is in the hand that moves the finger.
