The Lamp Left Burning

The house had settled into the heavy quiet that follows a church meeting. The refrigerator hummed, a low drone that seemed to fill the empty kitchen. It was two in the morning. It is easier to be the one who serves than the one who is served. It is easier to be invisible than to be seen and found wanting. The habit has grown roots deep in the soil of your days. It feels like the only honest thing left to say about yourself in that kitchen, yet what God has written in 1 John 2:27 says the anointing abides in you, and the Holy Spirit confirms that truth within.

But the oil does not ask permission. It does not wait for a vote. It does not require a platform or a pulpit or a title. It is placed on the head of the one who is already named. The name is not a rank. It is a mark. It is a seal. It is the sign that this person belongs to the work, not to the applause. When the world overlooks you, it is not a verdict on your worth. It is often the very condition that keeps the assignment pure. The shadows are not a prison. They are a place where the work is done without the noise of expectation. The oil is there. It has always been there. It is not waiting for you to earn it.

You are sealed for the work you are doing in the shadows. The Holy Spirit has not forgotten you. The same Spirit who anointed Jesus is the one who seals you. His word says, He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God. This is not a metaphor. This is a legal fact. The seal is on you. It is not a ticket to a stage. It is a mark of ownership. You belong to the work. The work belongs to God. The separation between the two is what keeps you free. You do not need their vote. You do not need their recognition. You need to recognize that the oil is already there.

The kitchen is not the only room where the work is done. The coffee is not the only offering. The silence is not the only voice. You have been there. You have been present. You have been faithful. The act of serving is the act of worship. The act of watching is the act of waiting. The act of staying is the act of standing. God sees the heart. He does not see the outward appearance. He sees the one who stands by the stove at two in the morning. He sees the one who holds the mug and feels the weight. He sees the one who is not called but is present. That presence is not empty. That presence is full of the Spirit. Scripture puts it plainly in 1 Samuel 16:7 that the Lord looks on the heart, and the Holy Spirit bears witness to that unseen reality.

You were ordained before you were formed. The Holy Spirit knew you before you knew the word. Jeremiah says, before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and I ordained you. This is not a promise for the future. This is a record of the past. You were not an afterthought. You were not an option. You were a plan. The plan did not require a platform. The plan required a person. The person is you. The work is the work. The anointing is the anointing. It is not a reward for performance. It is a provision for purpose. You do not have to prove you are worthy. You only have to accept that you are equipped.

The lamp was left burning. It was not for the guests. It was for the one who came home late. It was for the one who needed light in the dark. It was not a signal of status. It was a signal of care. The lamp does not care who sees it. It burns. The oil does not care who names it. It flows. You are the lamp. You are the oil. You are the flame. The flame is not yours. It is God's. But the wick is yours. The vessel is yours. The light is for the room you are in. The room is the kitchen. The room is the shadow. The room is the place where you feel invisible. But the light is there. It has always been there. It is waiting for you to see it, for He has promised in Psalm 23:5 that He anoints your head with oil, and the Holy Spirit makes that promise real in the quiet.

You have the Spirit as a guarantee. The seal is not a suggestion. It is a guarantee. The Holy Spirit is the down payment. It is the proof that the work is real. It is the proof that the anointing is real. It is not a feeling. It is a fact. The fact is that you are not alone. The fact is that you are not forgotten. The fact is that the oil is on your head. The oil is not a crown. It is not a trophy. It is a resource. It is a supply. It is a power. The power is not for showing off. The power is for doing the work. The work is the work. The work is the coffee. The work is the silence. The work is the staying, for 2 Corinthians 1:22 states that He has sealed us and given us the Spirit as a guarantee, and the same Spirit dwells within.

The word says, not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit. This is the key. The key is not in the committee. The key is not in the family. The key is in the Spirit. The Spirit is the one who anoints. The Spirit is the one who equips. The Spirit is the one who empowers. Strength is not required. Loudness is not required. Visibility is not required. Openness is enough. Willingness is enough. Presence is enough. The Spirit is there. The Spirit is working. The Spirit is doing the work. The vessel holds what is poured. The vessel is empty only if it refuses the filling. But the Spirit does not wait for permission. The Spirit is already in the room. The Spirit is already in the kitchen. The Spirit is already in the silence.

The anointing is not a rank. It is not a title. It is not a position. It is a relationship. It is a bond. It is a seal. The seal is between you and God. It is not between you and the church. It is not between you and the family. It is between you and the work. The work is the work. The work is the coffee. The work is the silence. The work is the staying. The staying is the victory. The staying is the faith. The staying is the love. The love is the proof. The proof is the seal. The seal is the Spirit. The Spirit is the anointing. The anointing is the oil. The oil is the lamp.
