He Came LookingJohn 1:48

The One Holding the Baby

This message is for A woman standing at the edge of the patio with somebody else's baby on her hip while the family is lined up on the back steps for a photograph needs to know that God came looking for her before anybody thought to call her in.

The nephew with the good camera wants everybody on the back steps while the light is still doing what it is doing, low and gold and coming in sideways over the fence, and he keeps saying it will only take a minute.

So they go out. Somebody counts. An uncle is fetched from the kitchen with a tea towel still over his shoulder, the two smallest are lifted onto the top step because they would be hidden otherwise, and an aunt is called in from the side gate by name, twice, until she comes. It takes a while to get them all. It always does.

Halfway through the arranging, the baby is handed to her. No discussion. Her sister needs both hands for her hair and the baby needs somebody, and she is the somebody, standing at the edge of the patio with a warm weight on her hip and a small fist in her collar. She does not mind. That is the part nobody would understand if she ever said it out loud: she genuinely does not mind, and it still goes through her like cold water when the nephew says right, that is everyone, and presses the button.

Nobody is unkind. Nobody thinks anything at all. That is the whole trouble with being the one at the edge. There is no villain in it, nothing to be angry about, no moment anybody could be asked to explain. Only a photograph that exists now, on a mantelpiece and in a family group chat, with everybody in it, and one figure just outside it holding the youngest member of the family, slightly out of focus, technically present.

And underneath the ache of it, quieter, the older question. The one that has been there since school teams and interviews and every room where names were read off a page. If nobody in a room full of people who love you thinks to send for you, perhaps there is a reason for that. Perhaps the reason is you.

The One Holding the Baby

Nobody in that garden had the deciding vote

Let me say the hard part first, because nothing lands on top of an unsaid thing. It is not really the photograph. It is what happened afterwards, quietly, in the car or over the washing up, the way it happens every single time: the fact that nobody called your name got turned into information about you. That is the injury. Being missed is a small wound and it closes. Being missed and then agreeing with it goes down much further, and it stays down.

So hear this before another mile of that road goes under you. You are known by God at the exact spot where you stood, at the edge of the patio with your arms full, and that knowing did not begin at the moment somebody finally noticed. This is not my kind opinion of you. It is what Scripture says God does, and the Holy Spirit is the one making it a living thing in you right now rather than a pleasant thought. You were seen first. The calling of your name comes second, and second is not lesser. Second is only later.

There is a man in John's gospel whose whole moment turns on this. Philip goes and finds him, full of news, and he is not especially impressed by the news. He comes along anyway. Before he has said one word about himself, Jesus says something about him that nobody had briefed, and he asks the only sane question available in the scene. How do You know me?

"Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you."John 1:48

Look at where the seeing sits in that sentence. Before Philip called him. Before the introduction, before the referral, before anyone thought to go and fetch him. Philip's part was real and Philip's part was late. A fig tree was an ordinary place to be on an ordinary afternoon, and it was where the eyes of God already were, with no one in the district putting his name forward. The Holy Spirit does not hand you that verse as history. He hands it over as the ordinary way God has always gone about finding people, including today, including you.

And this is where the room changes without one object in it moving. You have been under a fig tree of your own. A patio edge. A back step. A kitchen doorway with a sleeping child on your shoulder and a conversation going on in the next room without you. The word of God does not say He noticed you once the family caught up with itself. It says He was there first, and His Spirit is saying it over you in the present tense while the photograph sits exactly where it sits.

What the oil is actually for

Here is the part the word anointed usually loses on its way to us. In Scripture, oil is poured over a person for a work. A priest for the serving. A king for the governing. A prophet for the speaking. It is supply, poured on an assignment, and it is not a scoring system. Nobody in Scripture is ever described as carrying more of it than the person standing next to them, and no room full of relatives has ever been given a vote on where it lands.

Which quietly dismantles the question that has been running under your ribs since the shutter clicked. That question sounds like a question about your worth, and it is actually a question about God's supply. Does He equip the one He sends, or does He wait for a committee to nominate somebody first? The answer runs all the way through the book, and it never once bends toward the committee.

So put down the weight of qualifying, because qualification was never the entry requirement. You have been given a work, and it is smaller and far more ordinary than the thing that comes to mind when people use the word calling. The person you ring on Sundays. The shift nobody else wants. The child who only ever talks properly in the car. Scripture lays the supply on the assignment rather than on the standing of the one carrying it, and the Spirit of God is the one who brings that supply into an actual Tuesday.

And notice what is not being promised here. Not a moment when they all realize. Not the picture taken again with you moved into the middle of it. Vindication is a thin drink and it never once satisfied anybody who got it. The people on those steps love you and were counting heads in fading light. God came looking, and He did it without waiting for their permission and without needing their apology.

There is a reason this ends with your mouth open rather than your head nodding. Jesus measured the faith a thing like this takes and put it at the size of the smallest seed a farmer bothers with, and then He said speak to the mountain. Not think it at the mountain. Not hope it quietly while the plates drain. Say it, out loud, in the room where the trouble actually lives, because speaking is the appointed way a settled thing gets received by the person it was settled for.

The breakthrough

You are not waiting on a room to agree with you tonight. That is the sentence to stand in, and it is not a mood. It is written into how God has always worked, and the Holy Spirit is pressing it into you as you read: He came looking, He came first, and He came to the address where you were actually standing rather than the one you would have chosen to be found at.

Nothing here asks you to feel better about the photograph. Feelings arrive when they arrive and they keep their own hours. What is being handed to you is a fact you can speak while you still feel the cold water of it, which is the only kind of faith most of us ever get to use.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing where you are. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to say what is true about you has been given to you, and it is not the family's to grant or withhold. Scripture is the ground under every line, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it, never the volume of your voice. Whatever He does with the people in that photograph is His to decide, and you are not speaking here to move them. You are speaking because He came looking, and because what He came looking for is standing up in this room.

  1. Photograph on the mantelpiece, you keep your good afternoon and I will keep mine. You are a record of who stood on the steps, and you were never the register of who is known. Scripture says God saw Nathanael under the fig tree before a single person called his name, and He was not waiting on the family for a list.
  2. Habit of pretending I did not mind, you are off duty as of tonight, because I am not carrying you into another year. What God has written about me does not need me cheerful about being missed, and His Spirit keeps saying it over me while the room says nothing at all.
  3. Lord, You knew the way to this address before anybody thought to call me, and in Your name I am standing in it. You are not waiting on a room to agree with You, and You never have been. I thank You, because You came looking, and what You come looking for is what You supply.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
