Ready When Sent1 Samuel 16:13

The Shepherd's Long Watch

This message is for I have been tending a small, quiet group of people for a decade, and while I watch others get called to bigger stages, I start to believe my work is just a waiting room and that God forgot the word He spoke to me years ago.

The sun drops low over the dry hills, painting the dust in shades of gold and rust. Eli sits on a low stone wall, his boots muddy from the morning's walk. The flock is scattered across the pasture, some grazing near the creek, others huddled in the shade of an old oak. He knows exactly where each one is. He has been here for a long time. Years, in fact, have passed since the last time he heard a voice from outside this valley. He watches a young ram test the fence line, correcting it with a gentle nudge of his shoulder. The work is small. It is quiet. There are no crowds, no applause, no letters arriving in the mail. Yet his hands are steady, and his heart is watchful. He does not move. He simply stays, holding the space, knowing that the presence of the Shepherd is what keeps the flock from drifting into the ravine beyond the ridge. The silence is not empty. It is full of the sound of oil settling into the grain of the wood, deep and invisible, waiting for the next step.

The Anointing Works In The Quiet Field

The list of reasons for doubt is ready before anyone asks for it. The work feels too small. The years feel too long. The voice of the world whispers that the anointing is for the loud and the visible, not for the one who tends the quiet. But the silence of the field is not a sign that the word was canceled. It is the sound of the oil settling deep, working its way into the heart of the assignment. The gap between being set apart and being sent is not a void. It is a space where the equipment is being made real, in the hands of the one who calls the name.

You were ordained before the formation was complete. What God has written in Jeremiah 1:5 says that before you were formed in the womb, He knew you, and He ordained you. The Holy Spirit is not a reward for performance. It is the presence of the one who sent you. The anointing is not a rank that must be climbed. It is the oil that makes the work possible, right here, right now, in the place where the feet are planted.

The field is not a waiting room. It is the workshop. David was not training for a throne while he kept the sheep. He was being established in the very place where the lion and the bear would meet him. The Spirit of the Lord came upon him from that day forward, as recorded in 1 Samuel 16:13. The presence is the qualification. The platform is incidental. The work of the hands is the proof of the presence.

Do not say you are a child, for you shall go to all that I send you to. This is the word from Jeremiah 1:7, and it speaks to the heart that feels too small for the task. The Lord does not see as man sees. What looks like a pause is actually a preparation. The anointing is not acquired by effort. It is supplied by the one who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure, as Philippians 2:13 declares.

It is already settled that the one who established you in Christ has anointed you. 2 Corinthians 1:21 says plainly that He who establishes you with you in Christ and has anointed you is God. The seal is not a promise of future glory. It is a guarantee of present sufficiency. The Holy Spirit is the guarantee that the work in front of you is not beyond the supply that has already been given.

The cup runs over, but the head is anointed. Psalm 23:5 describes the provision that is not dependent on the size of the vessel. The oil is for the work, not for the ego. It is not a badge of honor. It is the substance of the service. When the hands are steady, the heart is watchful, and the presence is real, the work is done by the one who works in you.

Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the Lord of hosts. Zechariah 4:6 reminds the weary watcher that the strength for the next step is not found in the arm of flesh. The sending is not a promotion. It is a continuation. The same Spirit that anointed the head is the same Spirit that guides the foot in the valley. The work is ordinary, and it is holy.

You have an anointing from the Holy One. 1 John 2:20 speaks to the reader who feels invisible. The anointing abides in you, as 1 John 2:27 confirms. It does not expire when the noise stops. It does not vanish when the stage is empty. It remains, steady and sure, in the quiet field where the flock is known by name.

Whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men. Colossians 3:23 places the value of the work not in the eyes of the world, but in the eyes of the one who sees the heart. The anointing is not for the crowd. It is for the task. The supply is for the service. The presence is for the people.

Faithful is He who calls you, who also will do it. 1 Thessalonians 5:24 is the final anchor. The one who started the work will complete it. The silence is not a cancellation. It is a confirmation. The oil is settling. The work is real. The sender is present. The field is the assignment. The presence is the power. The hands are steady. The heart is watchful. The next step is not a leap into the unknown. It is a walk in the known.

The breakthrough

The silence is not a sign that the word was canceled. It is the sound of the oil settling deep. You have been in the field, and the field is the work. The anointing is not a rank. It is the supply for the task in front of you. The one who established you has anointed you, and the seal is the guarantee of your sufficiency. The Holy Spirit is not waiting for a bigger stage. The Spirit is in the room where you serve today. The work is ordinary, and it is holy. The presence is real, and it is enough. The next step is not a leap. It is a walk. The sender is present. The field is the assignment. The hands are steady. The heart is watchful. The oil is settling. The work is done by the one who works in you. The silence is the sound of the preparation. The presence is the proof of the power. The anointing is the supply for the service. The work is not a waiting room. It is the workshop. The field is the place where the anointing is made real. The sender is present. The work is real. The supply is there.

Declare this over yourself

  1. The quiet field, the silence of the place where you have stood for ten years, is not a waiting room but the workshop where the oil settles deep. Listen, the anointing is not a rank to be climbed but the supply for the task in front of you right now. In the name of Jesus, I declare that the presence is real and the work is holy.
  2. Compare your heart to the written word that says you were ordained before you were formed, and let that truth evict the fear that God has forgotten you. The Holy Spirit is not a reward for performance but the guarantee of present sufficiency in the place where your feet are planted. Hear the voice of the One who works in you to will and to do, and know that the seal is not for future glory but for your current service.
  3. Lord, the work in front of me is Yours and I am carrying it on what You supply. I am kept for what You said, and these years belong to You. I walk in the known because the sender is present and the hands are steady.
