Anointed For This1 Samuel 16:7

The Pot Is the Altar

This message is for I am the only one who knows how to make the soup for the family when my mother is in the hospital, and I feel like a cook, not a priest, even though I have been doing this for twenty years.

The steam curls up in thin ribbons, carrying the smell of cumin and slow time. Your hands are tired, the wooden spoon worn smooth by twenty years of stirring. The phone on the counter vibrates, then rings. You know who it is. It is the nurse, or the doctor, or a sibling calling to say the hospital is quiet tonight but the bill is coming. You do not answer immediately. You cannot. The soup is at the turning point. If you pull the lid now, the broth will thin. If you leave the stove, the rice will stick. So you stand there, one hand on the handle, the other reaching for the phone, and you feel the weight of it. You are just a cook. You are the one who makes the food because nobody else knows how. It feels small. It feels like a task, not a calling. You look at the pot and wonder if God sees this. You wonder if this is all there is. The fire beneath the burner is steady. It does not flicker when the phone rings. It does not dim because you feel small. It burns. The steam keeps rising. The room is warm. The food is ready to be fed. This is the place. This is the altar. The pot is not a symbol of something else. It is the thing itself.

The Ordinary Pot Is the Altar

The list of reasons you are the wrong person is ready before anyone asks for it. You know the recipes by heart, but you do not know the theology. You have not studied the priesthood. You have not received a title. You feel like a servant in the kitchen while the real ministers are on the stage. But the stage is not where the bread is broken. The stage is not where the oil is poured. The kitchen is where the family eats. The kitchen is where the strength comes from. The pot on the stove is not a lesser version of the altar. It is the altar where the family is sustained. It is the place where the daily need is met. It is the assignment. Scripture puts it plainly in 1 Samuel 16:7, for the Lord looks on the heart, and the Holy Spirit confirms this calling in the ordinary space.

His word says that the Lord does not see as man sees, for man looks on the outward appearance but the Lord looks on the heart. The Holy Spirit knows the heat in your hands. The same Spirit that anointed the priests knows the steam rising from your soup. You are not a cook playing at priesthood. You are the one sent to feed. The anointing is not a rank you lack. It is the presence that makes the food nourish. It is the power that turns ingredients into life. You have been sent to this pot.

Exodus 4:12 says now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall say. This applies to the tongue, yes. But it applies to the hands that stir. It applies to the voice that says, sit down, eat, you are loved. When the words are spoken to the family over the table, the word of God is being spoken. There is no improvising. There is no guessing. The teaching happens in the moment. The supply is in the words spoken over the food. The anointing is in the act of serving. It is not waiting for a bigger platform. It is in the pot right now. His Spirit guides the tongue, and what God has written ensures the words carry weight.

The ordinary work is the assignment itself. There is no larger call coming that makes this one a rehearsal. There is no future stage that validates this present kitchen. The pot is the altar. The family at the table is the congregation. The act of feeding is the ministry. Do not look for a sign that you are doing something holy. Look at the food. Look at the people who will eat it. Look at the love in your hands. That is the sign. That is the anointing. It is already settled. He has promised this through His word, and the same Spirit confirms the truth in the quiet of the kitchen.

2 Corinthians 3:5 says not that we are sufficient of ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God. You do not need to be a theologian to feed. You do not need to be a priest to anoint. You need to be present. You need to be faithful. You need to be the one who stands at the stove when the family is hungry. The sufficiency is not in your knowledge. It is in the God who works in you. It is in the Spirit who guides your hands. It is in the word that says, I will be with you. You are equipped. You have been set apart for this.

The ache says, this is too small. The ache says, I should be doing something bigger. The ache says, my mother is in the hospital and I am making soup. But the ache is lying. The soup is the medicine. The soup is the strength. The soup is the love that holds the family together when the world is falling apart. The pot is not a place of shame. It is a place of power. It is the place where God meets the family in their need. It is the altar where the bread is broken and the cup is filled. You are the priest of this family. You are the anointed one who feeds them. The Holy Spirit bears witness to this role, just as the written word declares the anointing.

Isaiah 61:1 says the Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me. This is not just for the prophets in the streets. This is for the ones in the kitchens. This is for the ones who stir the pot while the world spins. The Spirit is present in the steam. The anointing rests on the work. It is not a title. It is a presence. It is the power that makes the food nourish. It is the love that makes the family whole. The anointing is for this. The setting apart is for this. The matter is settled.

The phone will ring again. The news from the hospital will come. The bills will arrive. The worry will try to take over. But the standing is at the stove. The stirring is the soup. The serving is the food. The speaking is the word of love over the table. And in that act, the priestly role is fulfilled. In that act, the anointed identity is expressed. In that act, the sending is enacted. The pot is the altar. The family is the people. The food is the offering. The love is the power. The cook label is shed. The servant of the Most High is revealed. The anointing is for this.

Do not wait for a bigger stage. Do not wait for a louder voice. Do not wait for a more visible sign. The stage is here. The voice is here. The sign is here. It is in the steam rising from the pot. It is in the taste of the soup. It is in the faces of the people who eat. It is in the love that fills the room. It is in the anointing that rests on the work. It is in the word that is in the mouth. It is in the Spirit that is in the hands. The readiness is present. The equipping is present. The sending is present. The pot is the altar. The family is waiting. The food is ready. Serve them. Feed them. Love them. That is the assignment. That is the anointing. That is the work.

The anointing is not a rank. It is not a title. It is not a proof of favor. It is the presence of God in the ordinary work. It is the power that makes the work holy. It is the love that makes the work effective. It is the Spirit that guides the hands. It is the word that speaks over the food. It is the assignment that God has given. The doing is not because of skill. The doing is because God sent. The doing is not because of obligation. The doing is because of the anointing. The pot is the altar. The family is the people. The food is the offering. The love is the power. The priestly role is held. The anointed identity is lived. The sending is enacted.

The carrying has gone on for years. The hands are tired. The heart is heavy. The worry is loud. But the fire is steady. The steam is rising. The food is ready. The family is hungry. The love is there. The anointing is there. The word is there. The Spirit is there. The presence is there. That is enough. That is everything. The pot is the altar. The family is the people. The food is the offering. The love is the power. The priestly role is held. The anointed identity is lived. The sending is enacted. The matter is settled.

The breakthrough

Stop looking for a bigger assignment. Stop waiting for a louder call. Stop wondering if you are the wrong person. You are the right person. You are the one God sent. The pot on the stove is the altar. The family at the table is the congregation. The food in the pot is the offering. The love in your hands is the power. You are anointed for this. You have been set apart for this. It is already settled. The Holy Spirit is with you. The word of God is in your mouth. The anointing is on you. You are not a cook. You are a priest. You are the one who feeds. You are the one who sustains. You are the one who loves. You are the anointed one. The pot is the altar. The family is the people. The food is the offering. The love is the power. You are ready. You are equipped. You are sent. Serve them. Feed them. Love them. That is the assignment. That is the anointing. That is the work. It is already settled.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Kitchen, you are the altar where the family is sustained. The pot on the stove is the assignment itself, and the supply is already on it. I serve this family in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear, you have no place in the steam rising from the pot. The written word declares that the Lord looks on the heart, and the Holy Spirit confirms this calling in the ordinary space. You are evicted from the kitchen in the name of Jesus.
  3. Lord, the work in front of me is Yours and I am carrying it on what You supply. The anointing rests on the work, and the Spirit guides the hands that stir. I am sent into tomorrow, and tomorrow is not a placeholder.
