Worn Lightly2 Corinthians 3:5

The Quiet on the Bench

This message is for I sit on the board for the local food bank and I keep checking to see if anyone is impressed by my strategic advice, because if I am not seen as the leader with the divine spark, I am just a volunteer with a clipboard and I have no real standing.

The hall is empty. The folding chairs are stacked in neat columns against the far wall, their metal legs clicking softly in the silence. A woman sits alone in one of the few chairs left on the floor, holding a clipboard. The paper is blank, but her grip on it is tight. She is not tired. Her body is still, but her eyes are moving, scanning the room for a sign that her presence mattered. She is waiting for a nod, a smile, a look of recognition that would confirm her place in the hierarchy of the room. She checks the door, then the windows, as if someone might walk in and announce her arrival. The air is still. There is no applause. There is no whisper of her name. She wonders if she was just another body in the crowd, a volunteer with a clipboard, indistinguishable from the rest. The silence presses in, not with anger, but with a quiet indifference that feels heavier than any criticism. She shifts in her seat, the plastic creaking under her weight. She is looking for a sparkle, a glow, something that would tell her she is different, that she carries a mark the others do not have. But the room offers nothing but the pale light from the streetlamp outside, cutting through the dust motes in the air. She is waiting to be seen, and in the waiting, she is forgetting what she came to do.

The Oil Is Not A Badge

The list of reasons is ready before anyone asks for it. It is a long list, and it is always current. It names the gaps in the strategy, the moments where the advice did not land, the times when the room moved without waiting for permission. The checking has become a habit, a small, private ritual performed in the quiet corners of the day. It is not about the work itself. It is about the weight of the work, and whether that weight is recognized. The clipboard feels heavier when the eyes in the room do not follow the hand that holds it. The silence is not empty. It is full of the question that has no answer: does it matter if I am not seen as the one who knows the way?

You are not a badge to be worn, nor a rank to be defended. His word says, He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God. The Holy Spirit does not anoint to create a hierarchy of visibility. It anoints to equip. The oil is not a decoration for the head. It is a supply for the hands. When the eye looks for the shine, it misses the function. The anointing is not a proof of favor over another. It is a provision for the task at hand. The Holy Spirit is the one who seals this truth, not the gaze of the crowd.

The image of oil is often misunderstood. People think of it as something that makes a person glow, something that catches the light and draws the eye. But think of the oil on the skin of a laborer. It is there to reduce friction. It is there to keep the joint moving smoothly under pressure. It does not sparkle. It does not announce itself. It simply allows the work to be done without the joint seizing up. The supply for the work is not a performance. It is a lubricant for the friction of the assignment. The eye is not looking for the oil. It is looking for the movement that the oil makes possible.

Measuring standing by the volume of the response misses the point. Scripture puts it plainly that before you were formed in the womb, you were known and ordained. The Holy Spirit is the one who knows that ordination, not the board members. The ordination is not a title to be spoken aloud but a position to be occupied. Checking the room is a way of trying to confirm what the Spirit has already confirmed. The Holy Spirit does not need the applause to validate the assignment. The assignment is valid because the One who assigned it is faithful. The Spirit abides in the work, not in the reception of the work.

The fear is that without the visible sign, the work is void. It is that without the recognition, the effort is wasted. But the work is not wasted because it is unseen. The work is real because it is done. The food bank is filled. The families are fed. The logistics are managed. These things happen whether or not the strategic advice is praised. The value of the work is not contingent on the visibility of the worker. The Holy Spirit is at work in the unseen parts of the assignment. The Spirit is not in the spotlight. The Spirit is in the details, in the planning, in the quiet decisions that keep the operation running.

You are equipped for the task, not for the stage. What God has written is, not that we are sufficient of ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God. The Holy Spirit provides the sufficiency. It is not a sufficiency that requires an audience. It is a sufficiency that allows the hands to do what the hands are meant to do. The checking of the room is a way of trying to find sufficiency in the eyes of others. But the sufficiency is already there. It is in the ability to do the next task, the next call, the next decision. The Holy Spirit is the source of that ability, not the recognition of it.

The silence in the room is not a rejection. It is a space. It is the space where the work happens without the distraction of performance. When the eye stops scanning for the sign, the hand can focus on the task. The clipboard is not a prop. It is a tool. The strategy is not a performance. It is a plan. The work is not a show. It is a service. The Holy Spirit is present in the service, not in the show. The Spirit is not waiting for the applause to begin the work. The work has already begun. The Spirit is in the middle of it, in the details, in the decisions, in the quiet moments of focus.

You were ordained for the assignment, not for the acclaim. Scripture puts it plainly, go in this your might, have I not sent you? The Holy Spirit is the one who sends. The sending is not a call for a platform. It is a call to a place. The place is the boardroom, the kitchen, the warehouse, the street. The acclaim is not the goal. The goal is the good that is done. The Holy Spirit is with the one who is sent, not the one who is seen. The presence of the Spirit is a guarantee of the work, not a guarantee of the reception. The Spirit abides in the faithfulness of the worker, not in the applause of the audience.

The checking is a way of trying to control the narrative. It is a way of trying to ensure that the work is recognized as divine. But the work is divine because of the One who does it, not because of the way it is received. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes the work divine. The Spirit is not dependent on the human response. The human response is variable. The Spirit is constant. The checking of the room is a way of trying to align the human response with the divine reality. But the divine reality is already established. The Spirit is in the work, whether or not the room notices. The Spirit is in the work, and that is enough.

The breakthrough

Stop checking the room. Put the clipboard down. Look at your hands. Look at the task in front of you. The work is real. The supply is real. The anointing is not a badge to be defended. It is a supply for the work. You do not need to be seen to be effective. You do not need to be recognized to be equipped. His word says that our sufficiency is from God, not from ourselves. The Holy Spirit is in the work. The work is what matters. Let go of the need for the sparkle. Let go of the need for the sign. Trust that the sufficiency is in the task, not in the reception. The silence is not a rejection. It is a space for the work. Step into it. Do the work. The anointing is for the assignment, not for the reputation. You are equipped. The work is yours. Do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men. The Holy Spirit is with you. The work is real. The supply is real. Do the work.

Declare this over yourself

  1. The boardroom, you are not a stage for my performance but a space for the work. The Holy Spirit is present in the service, not in the show. I do the work heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.
  2. Fear of invisibility, leave me now because the written word declares that my sufficiency is from God. The Holy Spirit abides in the work, not in the reception of the work. My ordination is valid because the One who assigned it is faithful.
  3. Lord, the work in front of me is Yours and I am carrying it on what You supply. The Holy Spirit is the one who seals this truth, not the gaze of the crowd. I do the work in the name of Jesus.
