The Sentence You Have Ready

The hall smells of poster paint and wet coats. Half the chairs are stacked and half are still out, a boy in odd socks is doing a lap of the room with a cardboard telescope, and somebody is calling over the noise about a lunchbox left under the piano. Then the woman who runs the club stops beside you with a laminated sheet in her hand. The rota. The one that lives on the wall by the fire door.

Thursdays, she says. The reading group. Marianne is moving in October and you would be brilliant at it.

You say yes. Your mouth says yes while everything behind your ribs goes cold and quiet, and by the time you are at the gate with your keys already out, you have the sentence ready. You have had it ready since you were nine years old and a teacher made you read a paragraph out loud in front of thirty children. It is one line long. It is completely true. You have arranged three decades of your life around never having to say it.

I cannot read out loud.

That is the sentence. And on the way home you do the arithmetic you always do, the one where you find somebody better: the woman in the office who reads to her grandchildren over video calls, the retired teacher two streets away. Underneath all of it sits the small hard fact you have never once been wrong about. The words move when you look at them. In front of people, you lose the line.

God did not tell Moses he had it wrong

Before anything else, plainly: you are not exaggerating. The lack is real. It does not shrink because somebody kind pressed a laminated rota into your hand, and nothing here is going to tell you that thirty years of evidence was a misunderstanding. What is written at the burning bush is better than flattery, and the Spirit who breathed it there is breathing it over you now.

Because the same lack is already standing in that story, out in the sand, saying almost your exact sentence. Moses tells God he is not a man of words. Not yesterday, not the day before, not since God started speaking to him. Heavy of mouth, he says. Heavy of tongue. It is the line he has kept polished, and he says it to the fire because he assumes the fire has made a mistake.

And God does not contradict a syllable of it. Go slowly here, because this is the part we skip. He does not tell Moses he is wrong about himself. He does not hand him a compliment. He does not suggest he say it differently until it stops being true. He moves the question.

Who has made man's mouth? Who makes him mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall speak.Exodus 4:11-12

Do you see what happened to the subject of the sentence? Moses said, look at what I am not. God said, look at who made the mouth in the first place. The lack stayed exactly where it was and stopped being the deciding fact in the room. This is not a story about a better person than you. You have the same Maker, the same word written down to stand on, and the same Spirit alongside your mouth, in the one place He said He would be.

Which is why the question you have been carrying up the road cannot be answered as you have asked it. You have been standing at the edge of a Thursday asking whether you qualify, and by the measure you are using, the honest answer is no. Neither did he. The measure was never the entry requirement.

What comes with the asking

There is a difference between being handed a task and being sent with one, and the difference is supply. When God gives an assignment, the assignment arrives carrying what it needs. That is not a motivational idea, it is the pattern all the way through Scripture, and the Spirit is the one who administers it: a shepherd boy with a sling, a widow with a handful of flour, a table of fishermen with no training between them. You are not being asked to manufacture what is missing. You are being asked to turn up where God has already put the supply.

Notice what supply is not, because this is where it goes wrong for most of us. Supply is not fluency handed over at the door on Thursday morning. God did not make Moses eloquent. Aaron came, and the heaviness of mouth stayed exactly where it had always been. Decades later it was still there. What changed was that it stopped being in charge.

So hear this the way it is meant. You are already inside the assignment and not queuing outside it, because the sending is what qualifies a person, and He has done the sending. The word never says He swaps you for somebody more suitable. It says He goes with your mouth, and the Spirit who goes with it has no need of a better one.

Sit with that for a second, because it undoes something you have been quietly believing. You have been treating the lack as a locked door, and it was never the door. It was a fact about the person walking through it. God has never once required a person to arrive complete. He requires them to arrive. Everything the written word records about the ones He sent reads the same way: the shortfall was named out loud, sometimes by the person themselves, and then it sat there in the account like a piece of furniture while the Spirit got on with the work.

And the room on Thursday is children. That matters more than you think. A child learning to read does not need a performance. A child learning to read needs an adult who is not frightened of a difficult page. I am not telling you your struggle is secretly a talent, because that would be flattery and flattery will not carry you through a single afternoon. I am telling you God is not embarrassed by it, and He is not working around it either. He is working through the person it belongs to.
