The engine hums low, a vibration that travels up through the seat into her spine. She sits in the driver's seat of the yellow van, the one with the dented bumper and the faded sticker on the window. It is 8:15 in the morning. The playground is empty, but the gate is open. Her left hand rests on the wheel, and it is trembling. It has been trembling for months, a small, persistent shake that makes coffee cups rattle and pens skitter across desks. Today, the shake is louder in her head than the engine. She grips the wheel tighter, her knuckles white, trying to force the stillness her body refuses to give. She knows the route. She has driven it a hundred times. But behind her, twenty small bodies are about to pile into the back seats, and she is terrified that if she lets go for even a second, the road will take them. She looks at the dashboard, not to check the speed, but to see if the needle is steady. It is. Her hand is not. She waits for the first child to appear, her breath shallow, convinced that the tremor is a sign that she is the wrong person for this job, and that the only thing keeping those children safe is her refusal to let go, no matter how hard her bones ache.
The Steady Hand You Do Not Have
The list of reasons is ready before anyone asks for it. It is short, sharp, and final. You have a license. You have the van. You have the route. But you also have the tremor, and that detail feels like a crack in the foundation. You are afraid that if you look at your hands, you will see only your own failure. The fear is not about the road. It is about the belief that your body is the only thing holding the line. If the hand shakes, the wheel shakes. If the wheel shakes, the children are in danger. That is the story the silence tells you in the quiet moments before the engine starts, a story that Scripture puts plainly is not the final word, for the Holy Spirit bears witness with our spirits that we are God's children.
You were not hired because your hands are steady. You were hired because you are there. The anointing is not a fix for the tremor. It is not a patch over the weakness. It is the presence of God in the vehicle. It is the assurance that the path is safe not by your steady grip, but by His provision. You are set apart for this drive, not because you are perfect, but because He is with you. The Spirit of the Lord is upon you, and He has anointed you for this specific journey, just as the written word says that the Lord has anointed the chosen for the task.
The tremor is real. It is not a metaphor, and it is not a test of your faith. It is a physical fact, and it does not go away when you pray. But it is not the final word. God does not require a perfect instrument to complete the journey. He works in the weakness, not despite it. His strength is made perfect in weakness, and that is not a consolation prize. It is the mechanism. When the flesh fails, the Spirit takes the wheel. You do not have to be steady to be safe. You only have to be willing to let Him drive.
Exodus 4:12 says, now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall say. That promise is not just for speaking. It is for steering. It is for every moment where your hands do not know what to do. He is with your mouth, and He is with your hands. He is with the wheel. You do not have to figure out the next turn. He will teach you what to do. The road is not a test of your skill. It is a place where His guidance meets your obedience.
The children in the back seats are not relying on your grip. They are relying on the One who holds the wheel. You are the driver, yes, but you are not the protector. He is the protector. You are the vessel, but He is the source. The anointing is not a rank you earned by being steady. It is a gift He gave you because He sent you. You have an anointing from the Holy One, and it abides in you. It is not conditional on your hands being still. It is unconditional, because He is unchanging. His word says that the Spirit of the Lord is upon you, and the Holy Spirit makes this declaration true in your spirit, anchoring your identity not in your performance but in His written promise.
You are shaking, and that is okay. The trembling is not a sign that you are disqualified. It is a sign that you are human. And He is not afraid of human weakness. He works in it. He fills it. He guides it. You were ordained for this, before you were formed. He knew the tremor. He knew the fear. He knew the route. And He sent you anyway. That is not a mistake. That is a plan. You are not the wrong person for this job. You are the right person for this moment, and He is with you in it. Jeremiah 1:5 states that before you were formed, He knew you, and the Holy Spirit testifies to this ancient knowing, bringing the written word to life in your trembling hands.
The road is not a place where you have to prove your worth. It is a place where you can rest in His. You do not have to earn the safety of the children. It is already settled. He who establishes us in Christ and has anointed us is God. He is the one who keeps you. He is the one who guides the wheels. You do not have to be strong. You only have to be present. And He is present with you, right now, in the driver's seat. What God has written in 2 Corinthians 1:21 is the foundation of your safety, and the Holy Spirit applies this truth to your present moment, ensuring that the written promise is not just text on a page but the living power under your wheels.
When the first child climbs in, and the noise rises, and the road begins, remember this: your hands are not the only thing keeping them safe. His hand is on the wheel. You are not alone in this van. The Spirit of the Lord is with you, and He is with them. You are not driving alone. You are being led. And that is enough. That has always been enough. You do not have to be steady to be safe. You only have to be willing to let Him drive, for the written word says that not by might nor by power, but by His Spirit, the Lord of hosts says it.
The tremor will be there when the van arrives. It will be there when the engine is cut. It will be there when the children are helped out. But it will not be the story. The story is that the drive was made. The story is that the children are safe. The story is that He was present. Perfection was not the requirement. Willingness was. And the willingness was there. That is the anointing. That is the supply. That is the way.
Sit in the driver's seat. Feel the tremor. Do not fight it. Do not hide it. Just acknowledge it. And then acknowledge Him. He is there. He is with the driver. He is on the wheel. The driver is not the only thing keeping the children safe. He is. And that is the truth that sets the fear free.
Disqualification is not the verdict. Equipping is. The tremor is part of the story, but it is not the end. The end is that the children are safe. The end is that He was present. The end is that the anointing covers this work. The driver is not the wrong person. The driver is the one He sent. And He is with the driver, right now, in the driver's seat.
The engine is running. The van is ready. The children are waiting. You are in the driver's seat, and your hands are shaking. That is the truth. But there is another truth, and it is bigger. His hand is on the wheel. You do not have to be steady to be safe. You only have to be willing to let Him drive. The tremor is real, but it is not the final word. The anointing is real, and it is not conditional on your hands being still. You are set apart for this drive, not because you are perfect, but because He is with you. The Spirit of the Lord is upon you, as the word says, because the Lord has anointed you for this specific journey. You are not alone in this van. You are being led. And that is enough. That has always been enough. So take a breath. Let go of the fear. And let Him drive.
Declare this over yourself
- Field trip van, you are the place where His provision meets my trembling hands. I am not the protector, for He is the source who guides the wheel. I trust that the road is safe by His presence, not by my steady grip.
- Fear, you are evicted by the written word and the Holy Spirit who bear witness together. I do not rely on my body, for the Spirit of the Lord is upon me. I let go of the belief that my weakness is the final word.
- Lord, I am qualified for this drive because He who established me has anointed me. I walk in the name of Jesus, knowing that not by might but by His Spirit I go. I am set apart for this journey, and I am safe in His hand.
